Example 1


Let's find the length of the sides of a square with an area of 9.

The area of the square is 

side × side  or   3m × 3m = 9 m2

We see that the sides of the square are 3 metres long and are of equal length. 
It is a positive number. 

This number is called the square root of 9 and is written like this:

Example 2

The area of this square is 

We can use the calculator to find the length of the sides of the square by pressing the symbol for square root  and then entering the number 20.25.


Example 3

 

The area of this square is 10 square meters. 

Each side is 

(rounded off to two decimal places)

A square root is always a positive number.
