Lesson 3.

Powers of ten

Numbers written with the base of 10 are called 'powers of ten'.

Some examples with the base number 10

Example:

Scientific notation (standard form):

When a number is written as a multiple of a number between 1 and 9 and a power of 10 it is said to be written in Standard form ( or Scientific notation ).
(the base number can be 1 but not 10 , in other words, numbers from 1.0 to 9.999.......)

Examples:

1.
In scientific notation the number (4.4) is between 1 and 10.
2.
This is not scientific notation because the number (44) is not between 1 and 10.

Now try Quiz 3 on Powers. Good luck!
