Units of measurement used for volume:

        Review Lessons 1 and 2 on Measurements  


A cube with sides of length 1 metre has a volume of 1.
   (read one cubic metre).
The same cube measured in decimetres: 

 
   (read one thousand cubic decimetres) 
The same cube measured in centimetres: 

  (read one million cubic centimetres)

        Here is a table for cubic units. One cubic metre () is:

    Cubic units or litres  are commonly used when measuring volume.  

    When using both units it is important to remember that:

Examples:

How many are 10.5 ?

Answer:  10 500 000

Example:

How many litres are 5 ?

We know that 1 litre  = 1   so begin by converting into .

 
      5 0 0 0    

Answer: 5000 = 5000 litres

Example:

  How many are 500 cl (centilitres)?

500cl = 5 liters

5 liters = 5

Answer: 500cl = 0.005
